Life is a Series of
Moments—Not One Major Production
Life is funny. It can
run like clockwork, and then in a moment it can come crashing in on us.
Whether it was an error we made, someone else’s mistake or
just one of those things that happens, it’s something we know
we have to deal with. The question is, how?
Unfortunately, many times the answer is, “Not
well.” Instead of identifying what occurred and the best way
to address it, we allow ourselves to become frustrated, angry and
depressed. We agonize over it, or may even stop trying, just because
one small instant in our day went awry. “The day is
ruined!” Or so we tell ourselves.
We find it much easier to grouse about what went wrong than to figure
out what went right and how this issue can be resolved. The problem
with this is that we do not live life in a vacuum. Life is a series of
moments that when pieced together give us a perspective of ourselves,
our surroundings and the world. It’s a combination of our
mistakes and some things that are just out of our control. When we
allow one millisecond of that overall time continuum to trip us up, we
are headed for one very harried existence.
How can we get back on track? By changing the way we think about these
negative incidents, mishaps, and inconveniences, and keeping track of
how much emphasis we allow ourselves to place on them.
There’s a saying that is used by many in the substance abuse
community, but has much broader applications: “Grant me the
serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change
the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
We are not in as much control of our lives as we would like to believe.
A good start toward changing your attitude is realizing that no
one’s life is perfect. Everyone has their share of heartache,
devastation and bad days. And the only difference is how they deal with
it. Begin looking for the positive things that happen during your day.
To reinforce this, create a “What I am Grateful
For” list and post it where you can view it on a daily basis.
Recent studies have shown that gratitude is an effective way to
overcome or prevent depression, work through problems and become more
productive.
One of the best ways I have found to live life is to understand that
every day has its ups and downs. No day is perfect. I try to stay in
the moment and not judge myself for things in the past; instead, I look
at every day as a new beginning. Sometime during the day I might look
back and think I could have done something better, but I quickly remind
myself again that life is a series of positive and challenging moments
and I make my intention to do the best I can in this given moment.
This mindset allows me to remain flexible, so that whatever happens I
can be less rigid in my reactions and thought processes. It allows me
to see that although I made a mistake or stumbled, I was meant to learn
something about a particular person or experience. Perhaps I was being
guided toward something better, or I needed to acquire a new skill, or
just develop a tougher skin.
I remember feeling sad when my husband and I bid on our first home in
New Jersey. The broker told us it was a done deal and the next day she
said someone else had made a better offer. I was so disappointed! In
time my husband and I found another home and, believe it or not, this
home, a converted barn, was perfect for us and better suited to our
lifestyle than the other. If we hadn’t lost the first house,
we would have never found the one we did. Life is a mystery –
a series of unexplained moments. I have found life becomes easier when
you stop scrutinizing your own behavior and everyone else’s
actions as well. For example, usually people aren’t really
trying to insult or snub you, they’re just busy.
My decision to focus on the positive has made me a happier person.
It’s not as if I ignore negative people or difficult,
challenging situations in my life. It’s just that I
don’t let these individuals or situations control me or get
stuck in the misery and frustration of it of it all.
Acknowledging that life is a series of moments allows us to have more
empathy and compassion for negative people around us, and to realize
difficult situations are just a stormy cloud passing overhead. The sun
will shine again.
There is some truth to the saying “Every cloud has a silver
lining”. Start looking for yours.
